We’ve had an exciting few weeks here at The Pearl. After using our park to showcase the renowned designer Kelly Towles’ art installation, Light The Way, and throwing our own splashy grand opening party, we’re thrilled to have introduced ourselves to Silver Spring.
As if all this excitement wasn’t enough, now comes the fun part: meeting our new residents and growing our community. Just a few weeks ago, our very first resident unpacked the last box in their new apartment. We popped by to see how they were doing, and get all the details about their move-in story.
1. We’re so thrilled you’ve chosen The Pearl! Where were you living before this new spot?
Thanks! It’s definitely cool and different being the first resident in a place. I was actually living in Durham, NC before this. I was there for about 6 months, and before that I actually lived in D.C.
2. What drew you to The Pearl as a new home, and what made you ultimately choose it?
At first, I was considering a bunch of different locations. I know D.C. pretty well — the first apartment I lived in was part of a really nice complex in Northeast, but it was a small community without too much happening. When I looked up “silver spring apartments” on Google, I fell in love with The Pearl’s websites, and totally got behind the concepts they were talking about.
3. How are you planning to decorate your space? Do you follow any sources you go to for inspiration?
I’m doing a mixture of things: namely, fusing fun modern styles with the stuff I already have! I’m obsessed with HGTV. I subscribe to Joanna Gaines’ At Home blog and devour everything related to the series Fixer Upper. I feel like my design taste is heavily inspired by that show and by all things Joanna in general.
4. Have you purchased any new furniture? Where have you been looking?
Not too long ago I bought a bunch of furniture, most of it from IKEA! There I took care of all the big pieces — a couch, a comfy chair, a TV setup and a bed — and also picked some frames so I can hang artwork from my mom. She’s an artist (well, a retired doctor turned artist) who does printmaking!
I also have a lot of fun pieces from Wayfair, like a really nice rug and a coffee table. I stopped by Target of course, and have a couple random artsy pieces from Michaels — some pretty, lit-up letters made out of metal and wood. I love those, and I have a little bistro set for my balcony outside.
5. What has been your favorite way to beat the stress of moving?
I am totally a homebody at heart. Usually I’ll sit down in my apartment and chill out watching TV. I also work out every other day. Ooh, that’s actually a really good one. If I’m super stressed, I’ll work out. The gym here is awesome, it’s right down the hall from me.
My move wasn’t even that stressful. The first day I moved in, everyone at The Pearl was running around trying to make sure everything was okay. I even got a lovely welcome bag with a bunch of local goodies. It was all very cute and sweet.
6. What are you most looking forward to with living at The Pearl?
The gym! That’s number one for me, a total deal make-or-breaker. My apartment complex has to have a gym, and not one that feels like you’re working out in a dungeon. The Pearl has all these windows and all this light. It’s beautiful!
I’m also excited for the chef. I’ve heard he’s going to use the garden outside to pick ingredients for his dishes!
7. What does “live wisely” mean to you, and what is your favorite way to do this?
I like to invest in where I live. I think that’s living wisely. When you think through it and pick a place like The Pearl, you’re getting a return on investment by being part of a special community. You don’t have to go out, you can go downstairs and meet all kinds of cool people. You don’t have to pay for a gym membership, you can just go to this gorgeous fitness center. There’s so many amenities here. You end up getting your money’s worth in a lot of ways.
8. Do you have any tips, tricks or advice for someone considering a move to The Pearl?
Listen to yourself and size up exactly what you want before you go through with a move like this. You’re only going to live wisely if you’re able to take advantage of the opportunities here. If your commute is 80 hours, you can’t swim, you don’t want to connect to the people around you, and you don’t like sunlight, you’re not going to enjoy it here.
For me, The Pearl was the perfect combination of things I liked. It’s smack in the middle of Silver Spring, but also has its own space. You can walk one way and head into the city, and in the other direction you’ll find yourself in Rock Creek Park. I love having those options.
